25: The Owner and the Owed

“I can’t believe something like this would happen in my very tavern!” Curondor said as he shook his head. “An assassination attempt! On my own guests! And during breakfast no less!”

Eileen wasn’t quite sure what Curondor was more upset about: that an elf had nearly tried to kill Kyne inside his tavern, or that the pleasant atmosphere of breakfast at the Half-Full Chalice had been ruined by the death of one of his staff. It did appear that many of the elves who normally frequented the tavern felt a little put off by a dead elf on one of the tables that they normally ate from. There had certainly been a very quick exodus from the tavern, even after the staff had cleaned up the body.

What concerned Eileen more, however, was the fact that this elf had apparently snuck into the tavern and nearly gotten away with murder in the first place. She also had the harrowing thought that this might not be the only attempt on their lives.

“What did she say?” Eileen asked as they sat in the now very cramped common room that was in between all of their sleeping quarters. “Something about us having been near the plague and thus needing to be purified?”

It didn’t make sense. The common area in between their sleeping quarters was small. Of course, everything in the tavern was lavish. There were a few very cozy couches and one small table for them to sit around. But between their entire group, the two elves who had traveled with them from Maedry, and Captain Lonestar who’d been called in by Curondor for this meeting, their space was very cramped.

“Perhaps it has something to do with the howlers that I saw yesterday?” Artemis said.

Eileen thought the man still looked quite bleary-eyed. He had managed to make up for his lack of sleep with a small nap, but after the chaos of the morning, he had been roused from his bed fairly quickly.

“Howlers?” Captain Lonestar asked. “What are howlers?”

It didn’t take long to explain the odd people they had seen in the mountains of the dwarves. Those who had talked about the plague as some sort of blessing that would allow the land to be purged of anyone who didn’t worship the god of the plague.

Captain Lonestar shook her head.

“I assure you there’s nothing like that here in Vassalmell! No elf in their right mind would worship such a vile thing!”

“I saw a temple dedicated to just that,” Artemis said. “Should I be able to find it again, I will gladly take you to it.”

Eileen watched as Captain Lonestar crossed her arms. “I refuse to believe such madness. Elves worshiping a plague. Indeed!”

“Well,” Curondor said, “we do in fact have an elf who decided that she would very much like to kill our guests. I wonder why that might be.”

“Because we’re humans?” Christina said. “Because we are present? Because we have a dwarf with us? Because we all made enemies today? I imagine there are quite a few different reasons people would want to kill us.
